What BMI does not measure
BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measure. It does not account for muscle mass (athletes may have high BMI but low body fat), bone density, fat distribution (belly fat vs. overall fat), or differences due to age and gender. A person with a "normal" BMI can still have metabolic risk factors, and someone with a "high" BMI may be perfectly healthy.
Consult a doctor before making any health decisions based on BMI.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a healthy BMI for Indians?
By standard WHO criteria, normal BMI is 18.5–24.9. However, health experts recommend lower thresholds for South Asians: overweight starts at 23 and obese at 27.5, due to higher metabolic risk at lower body fat levels.
Is BMI accurate for Indians?
BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations for Indians. Research shows South Asians tend to have more body fat and higher metabolic risk at a given BMI compared to Europeans. Indian-specific thresholds (overweight ≥ 23, obese ≥ 27.5) are more relevant.
What is the ideal weight for my height?
The ideal weight range corresponds to a BMI of 18.5–24.9. For example, for 170 cm height, the ideal weight is approximately 53.5–71.9 kg. The calculator shows this range for your specific height.
How do I calculate BMI manually?
BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)². For example, if you weigh 70 kg and are 1.70 m tall: BMI = 70 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 70 ÷ 2.89 = 24.2, which is in the normal range.
